VIDEO: How an AC to DC Converter (a.k.a. AC Adapter) Works

While I was searching for an AC to DC converter or adapter to replace my other laptop’s busted one, I stumbled into this very cool video explaining and, more importantly, showing in a very simple practical setup how the ubiquitous AC adapter works. We all know that these things are necessary for us to run and operate many of today’s electrical devices, gadgets and appliances but not many know how they work. The video is able to explain some of the very basic technical and scientific principles that govern the electric current and how that 120-volt (or 240-volt) AC power running through your home’s mains is converted into lower voltages that are needed to run many of today’s devices and appliances. Watch the video and enjoy:

In this video you’ll probably gain some basic understanding of the following:

  • What a transformer does
  • What a capacitor and diodes do for the AC to DC conversion process
  • Very simple schematic diagram and symbols
  • What AC or alternating current is
  • What a rectifier and a smoothing capacitor do
  • AC waveform
  • What an oscilloscope does
  • etc.

Thanks to JeffRegester for the brilliant and informative video.

    Hi there!
What a great explanation of this process. I was always curious about how it worked without frying the smaller electronics! Now I know! Very useful.

    Thank you! Vlad

The best explanation of the process by silentgenerator.net that anyone can understand and learn how Power from the wall is changed to useable DC direct current power for our devices.

    thank you
