Six Tips To Buying A Silent GenSet

First off, there is no such thing as a totally silent genset. After all, every generator includes an engine that runs on gasoline, diesel, or electrical power. What you actually get is a portable power generator that has been rendered quieter by its manufacturers, either through reducing engine noise or with the use of sound dampening accessories. So when you hear all this talk about silent generators, they are generally taken to mean “reduced noise” gensets.

There are quite a number of excellently designed silent generators available in the market today. They feature designs with considerably reduced noise levels that don’t unduly disturb your peace, build up your anxiety, or cause complaints from the neighbors each time you turn them on.

If you have never bought a portable power generator before, and are in search of the perfect silent genset for your home or small office, here are some tips to help in your quest:

1. Ask people who already own a silent portable generator to let you listen. Everyone has different levels of noise comfort, and it will be a good idea to listen to a few models to get a general idea of what silent gensets sound like. Check out our generator noise guide.

2. Determine what size generator you need. Depending on your home or office configuration, take measurements and bring this information with you when you visit your nearest portable power generator retailer.

3. Find out how much wattage you need. Do you need to power your whole home? Lights and refrigerator only? Lights and your computer? The kind of silent genset you buy will depend on the wattage you require. Check our little generator wattage guide for more information.

4. Visit your nearest retailer. Take a look at all their models and compare decibel levels at various distances. There are various silent gensets with a range of noise levels. You will notice the really badly designed ones often sound like lawnmowers, while better made models emit 70 decibels at a distance of 7 meters. That’s the average sound of an air conditioning unit, and it complies with most municipal noise pollution laws.

5. Look for built-in sound dampening systems. Most portable power generators that claim to be “silent” very often aren’t. Ask your retailer if the silent generator you’re interested in comes with a muffler, or other sound dampening accessories.

6. Check the price. There are quiet generators you can start manually, and there are others that can be hard-wired to your electrical system so that they kick-in automatically as soon as your main power source fails. Although the latter is more expensive, make sure you are buying quality and not a brand name.

Once you’ve found a couple of silent generators that meet your requirements, assess your budget and do a price comparison to make sure you buy the most cost-efficient silent genset for your home or small office use.

The next time the power dies down on you, you’ll be gratified for the silent generator that quietly purrs in the background, providing you with enough electricity to get through a power interruption.
